A further selection of Jemima's Inktober sketches

Having given you a selection of the chapter illustrations for Willoughby the Narrator last month, it's only fair we give you some from The Princelings of the North this.  Enjoy.

We have a target release date for this book - Dylan & Dougall's birthday, 27th November 2017.  It hasn't even gone to through second editing yet, but you can look forward to it anyway.

A selection of Jemima's Inktober posts

Today, Jemima finishes the chapter illustrations for Willoughby the Narrator (Princelings book 7), so tomorrow she's starting the ones for The Princelings of the North (Book 8), which will doubtless become known as D&D or Dylan's book for short.  That boy always did take over everything.

Here are a selection of the Willoughby illustrations.

Willoughby's chapter illustrations during Inktober

Jemima has taken up the inspiration of Danielle English, her cover illustrator, to join in the challenge of Inktober.

Inktober encourages participants to do a pen and ink sketch or drawing daily during October, and to post it publicly in their favourite social media.

Jemima has 'about' 19 chapter illustrations to do for book 7 of the Princelings series, Willoughby the Narrator, and she thought this would be a great idea to push her to complete them and to share them with you as they unfold.  She'll be posting them to her Pinterest wall first, which should also share on Twitter and the Princelings Facebook page.

Only 19?  what about the other 12?  Well, there are the illustrations for book 8, the Princelings of the North, to be done too...

Geoffrey was part of the commissioning team for the second Empire Flying Boat to be launched, Centaurus, G-ADUT (picture courtesy of Mark Postlethwaite).  In White Water Landings he talks about the altitude testing - 10,000 feet with an unpressurised cabin and no oxygen, and the landing when he was sent into the tail section to report on how it felt. He had nothing to hold onto except a few wire struts, and only the airframe skeleton to stand on!

Enter here for a chance to win.  Open until 30th September, for members anywhere in the world.

Sign up to receive Viridian series Newsletters

If your first reaction was 'I've already done that', then please do so again.

You may have seen Jemima's post about the failure of the newsletter software in April.  This has now been sorted out (it takes a while when she's written three books and edited another since the end of March).  The problem appears to have occurred before the backup she re-installed, which meant we lost the original list of subscribers completely.

We apologise for the inconvenience, but please sign up again at the Viridian Series website, and get ready to receive occasional offers, exclusive news and insights into Pete and the Swede, Dolores, Maggie and Zito as they explore the outer reaches of the galaxy.  And inner bits, too.

We promise we will not use your email address for any other purposes than sending news of the series. Your data will not be shared with any third party, other than the app MailPoet, who host the sign-up admin (subscribe/unsubscribe forms and algorithms), and they do not keep any copies of your details.

At present we plan to re-release The Perihelix in the autumn, with special arrangements for those already in possession of the first editions.

Jemima Pett announces four new Princelings books

Jemima Pett has spent July working on the completion of her Princelings of the East fantasy adventure series for older children.

Jemima says
"I approached July thinking I had book 7 to write, which was already scheduled to be the story of Willoughby, who we met in The Talent Seekers (#5).  I had written about one third of it last winter, but stopped because I couldn't see how to get in everything that needed to happen before the last book.
So the first thing I did was to write out 'A Short History of the Realms', noting the key events from the start of the books (thanking myself for doing part of this for Bravo Victor) to the final denouement.  That made it very clear that I had one more entirely 'new' book to put in, and instead of trying to shoe-horn other short stories where they didn't belong to fill in other gaps, I could revert to an old idea, of collecting those in what will now become book 9."

The first draft of book 7, to be called Willoughby the Narrator, is now finished, and Jemima expects to finish the first draft of book 8 in a few days time.  Intriguingly, that is to be called The Princelings of the North, and stars Dylan and Dougall, who have so far appeared only in short chapter books or short stories, included in the BookElves Anthologies.

Our trusty cover illustrator, Danielle English, already had the brief for book 7 and the newly numbered 10, and has now also been briefed on the other two books.

Our release timetable (subject to editing and everything else involved in a book launch) is now:
  • Willoughby the Narrator (Princelings #7) - winter 2016/17
  • The Princelings of the North (Princelings #8) - autumn 2017
  • The Chronicles of Marsh (Princelings #9) - autumn 2018
  • Princelings Revolution (Princelings #10) - winter 2019/20
All timings subject to change.  Apologies to our antipodean readers for working on northern seasons.

Read more about these books and the latest on their publication on Jemima's blog or by following the Princelings website

Reblog from Daily (W)rite - How to Structure a Novel

This excellent post from Michael Dellert on structuring your novel using some very formulaic approaches is very interesting.  You may be a pantser, but it could help sort out your narrative problems when you're editing.  Structure your work better and it may read better, too!

The Perihelix withdrawn pending a second edition

The Read to Review programme from Goodreads' Space Opera group generated further detailed feedback which has resulted in removing The Perihelix from sale with immediate effect.

Jemima intends to revise the book, putting it through all the editing processes as usual, and bring it back out later in the year.

If you bought an ebook version, you should be able to upload the second edition free of change, unless she makes so many changes that a new title and ISBN is the preferred route.  If that happens, we will make vouchers available to our early purchasers via the Viridian Series newsletter.  So sign up to get the latest news.

And at that point - we discover that the Viridian Series website's mailing list is down.  Please use the email follow button and we'll let you know when the newsletter sign up is back online.

May update

We have a lot of action on at present:

Princelings of the East

For the Princelings series, Jemima is returning to the seventh book, which had 'about a third' drafted last year.  She reckons she has to outline the last book in order to complete the seventh, and since she never outlines, she's been putting it off!
The paperbacks continue to be available at the Book Depository and other stores, as well as the ebooks online at Amazon, Apple, B&N, and Smashwords.
Bravo Victor is our May Goodreads Giveaway.  If you're a Goodreads Member, do enter for a chance of winning one paperback copy, sent anywhere in the world.

We also have a giveaway for Children's Book Week, running until May 8th.

Viridian System

Jemima completed the first draft of Book 2 at Camp NaNoWriMo, and (not unusually) couldn't let go so wrote an opening to Book 3 as well!  She's letting it fester for a but before returning to edit it.  You can read more about this, and her thoughts on the title, on the Viridian System website.

We are offering 10 copies of the ebook to members of the Space Opera Fans group on Goodreads in their Read to Review programme.  If you are not a Space Opera Fan member, then leave a comment below if you're willing to commit to a review on your blog and at least one buying site (including Goodreads) by the end of September 2016.

BookElves

The BookElves are considering whether to do a third volume this autumn.  The general consensus appears to be that everyone is willing to contribute, but nobody has much time to put it together and promote it.  Since Jemima aims to get one book out this autumn, we think Volume 3 will probably be postponed for one year, but  no firm decision has been made.

White Water Landings

We are considering changing the version that is available in print. At present there is a Createspace paperback, and the Blurb-produced souvenir hardcover with spot colour.  Given the time problems we have in receiving our own copies from Createspace (due to shipping and customs etc, it usually takes two month for a consignment of books to reach us here in the UK) we produced an edition with minor amendments through Blurb - meaning to do the paperback, but a new hardback edition was produced as well.  These are currently only available through the Blurb store.  We may swap those over so the Blurb edition becomes the internationally available  hardcover and paperback, and leave the Createspace paperback and Blurb colour version available in the respective online stores.  You would then be able to order those versions via this site (and the White Water Landings website) if you preferred.  It might affect prices too - probably reducing the cover price to you.

April events and work in progress

As mentioned last month, Jemima attended the 'Flying through the Thirties' symposium at Croydon Airport, where her display of her father's archive was well received. Among things mentioned were the Q code system of communication - and the manual is in the archive.  The book White Water Landings caught people's attention, too.  There are plans to attend a Croydon Airport Museum Open Day in September or October.

Jemima talks through the Q code book with a visitor

Camp NaNoWriMo has given Jemima the impetus to get on with Book 2 of the Viridian System series - it still lacks a title, but it has reached about 82% of the anticipated word count.  Jemima comments: "It's a lot of adventure, with some mystery and plenty of twists, but I need to work on the action element once it gets to the editing stage."  Yes, that's a first draft for you!

Jemima plans to do Camp NaNo again in July to focus on the seventh Princelings book - provisionally called The Chronicles of Willoughby the Narrator.

Watch out for a Goodreads Giveaway next month - Bravo Victor will complete the romp through the Princelings paperbacks.

A busy month for Jemima

March has been a busy month for Jemima Pett as she has been preparing for next month's A to Z Challenge.  She revealed her theme this week; pop over to her blog to see what she's doing.

On Saturday she attended the Ely Writers' Day, which was fascination for the range of topics covered, and lots of useful tips.  For example, she can become a member of Cambridgeshire libraries even though she doesn't live in Cambridge, and take advantage of their online catalogues for research.  Cambridgeshire and Norfolk use different distribution systems, too, so the ebooks listed may differ.  As a thank you, Jemima donated paperbacks of all six Princelings of the East books and a hardcover copy of White Water Landings to the library.

Jemima was one of the finalists in the Ely Writers Centre short story competition, and was very pleased to come third in this, her first attempt at a competition.

Preparations are in hand for the Airminded Symposium at Croydon Airport Museum on 16th April.  Apart from the new banner we revealed in February, she's preparing displays of her father's photographs, some documents and flying manuals, and some extracts from the books.  Booking is now open for this event, you can get a direct link from the post on White Water Landings website, but we've experienced some difficulty with it even so.  Tickets cost £35, and include a three-course lunch and a tour of the museum.

All this prep work is to leave her time to focus on writing book 2 of the Viridian System series during Camp NaNoWriMo in April.  The focus she gets at Camp to finish 2000 words a day is worth the effort, Jemima says. "It's all about time management, especially with A to Z Challenge people to visit later in the day.  I write first, get some fresh air and exercise, then attend to the blogging in the evening.  I don't know why I don't do that all the time, really."

Well, you know what they say; if you want to get something done, give it to a busy person.

Next weekend is Easter, so we wish you a happy Easter, Passover, and any other celebration you make.

Goodreads Giveaway for March

We are pleased to return to our giveaway of the Princelings of the East series in paperback.  Although they were all finally ready for publication in July, some of the later books made it to paperback for the first time in April last year, and the Talent Seekers is one of those.

The Talent Seekers finds us with a new hero - Humphrey, who was briefly featured in the Prologue of Princelings and the Lost City.

Humphrey is on the run, although he's not sure who from, and there are plenty of other fleeing oppression in their homes, now being chased for fun by the lords of one of the other castles.

Humphrey's special talent is for hearing things from a long way away, even through walls. This brings him within reach of a special message - one that leads him to a new home and a new career, fighting against the forces threatening the stability of Castle White Horse, the Talent Seekers, alongside people he is proud to discover are his friends.
