December Blizzard!

After October's editing frenzy, there seems to be a veritable blizzard of activity surrounding Jemima's work on the internet at present.

On The Story Reading Ape, Jemima completes a full twelve-month of posts this Sunday.  Topics have ranged from reading challenges to naming characters, from wish-lists to a tribute to Fred and George. We would like to thank Chris Graham for all his work finding great posts to alert us all to, and for giving guest authors so many opportunities to blog.

Over on Solveig Werner's blog, she is doing an Advent Calendar.  Jemima has provided two insights into the way different castles carry out their Yuletide festivities in the Princelings world.  They are featured on Dec 2nd and 10th.

Sally Cronin's Smorgasbord invited guest authors to submit seasonal posts to revisit - fact or fiction.  It's truly a smorgasbord of stories, tips, recipes, memoirs, and much more.  You'll love the twist in Jemima's story Christmas Lights.

Opportunities to get the books at special seasonal prices are featured in the Bargain Books Under $3 section of BookGoodies.com.  The Princelings Box Set, Traveler and Talent Seekers have already had features - watch out for the ones to come.

Over on the Kindle Book Review, theres an extravaganza of 'meet and greet' as they invite you to follow authors on their Amazon pages, and get entries in a Giveaway to win one of two Kindle Fires, plus loads of reader goodies.

If all that wasn't enough, Jemima is fundraising for the Ulva Buyout with her Justgiving page, in conjunction with the launch of The Princelings of the North, which is now available for pre-order at Amazon, iTunes, Kobo and B&N.

If you'd like to join in with a Book Blast for the launch on 30th January, she has a sign-up page for that on her blog.

We would like to wish you a very happy holiday season, and hope you and your family manage another year of this crazy world in relative security, health and prosperity.  Happy yuletide!

Editing frenzy

Jemima Pett is currently in an editing frenzy that is likely to keep her fully occupied to the end of the year.

The Princelings of the North

The Princelings of the North is back from the external editor.  We'd like to thank Dawn Cavalieri immensely for all her hard work on this.  Jemima is working on the changes needed, and may pass it to her beta readers for a final check before it is released.

The target date is 30th January 2018; the ebook is already available for pre-order at Kobo, B&N and on the Apple ibookstore.  When the final draft is ready for the beta readers it will also be submitted for Kindle pre-order at Amazon.

If you are interested in doing an early review and/or a book launch post on your blog, please leave a comment below.

The Viridian Series books 1 and 2

After the sad death of Kate Jackson, who gave us so much free advice on re-editing the second edition of book 1, we are very grateful to our new editor who stepped in and gave it a thorough assessment.

Once the Princelings has been put to bed, Jemima will tackle the re-edit of The Perihelix.

Jemima is also in the middle of the first edit (third draft) of Curved Space to Corsair.  She may complete that, go back to the Perihelix, and then do some more revisions, to make sure changes in the first book are reflected in the second.

At present our best estimate is a spring release for The Perihelix 2nd edition, followed by Curved Space to Corsair next autumn.

Jemima's September guest post on TSRA

You may be interested in Jemima's September guest post on the Story Reading Ape's blog.  She discusses the dilemma for new authors who see Goodreads as an opportunity to push their books - but how do they do that without being banned for spamming people?

According to Goodreads, the site has over 55 million members worldwide. That’s a lot of readers. It doesn’t take much to understand why nearly every self-published person comes to the conclusion that they should be promoting their books on the site.
It’s a sensitive issue, and one that has changed a little since the original Goodreads was sold to Amazon. I notice more ways that Amazon and Goodreads use each others’ opportunities. Amazon now enables you to do giveaways… Goodreads has been doing that since it started. Goodreads now has an extensive list of marketing opportunities that it promotes to authors, which look like things in the Amazon school of marketing to me, but are nevertheless valid and valuable opportunities – so take them.

Jemima is editing

Following the publication of Willoughby the Narrator in April, Jemima has turned her energies to rewriting and editing.

  • The Princelings of the North (Princelings book 8) is now with our external editor
  • The Perihelix (Viridian System book 1) has come through a revision and editing process (Jemima locked herself away during Camp NaNoWriMo to complete it).  We are negotiating with a suitable external editor to handle all the Viridian series books.
  • Curved Space to Corsair (Viridian Series book 2); Jemima has completed a structural assessment and is now working on the edits.  She aims to complete the second draft by the end of August.

Beta readers

The Perihelix is now ready for beta readers, preferably those who have already read and criticised the first version. If you fit that category, and would like to make constructive comments about the new version, please leave a comment below with a link to your original review (not necessary if you emailed your comments direct to us).

The Princelings of the North can be pre-ordered on iTunes, B&N and Kobo.  If you'd like to see the buying page on Smashwords, it's here (Smashwords do not do pre-orders).  The current target date is 30 January 2018.  There is a full description of the story here.

It will be set up for pre-order on Amazon once it comes back from the editors.

A Goodreads Giveaway for WHITE WATER LANDINGS

To celebrate the start of the Empire Flying Boat Service 80 years ago, we are offering two copies of Geoffrey Pett's memoir in a Goodreads Giveaway during June.

After his recruitment and training by Imperial Airways, Geoffrey was sent out to Africa aged just 22, to set up ground stations on the new flying boat route operated by Imperial Airways from London, England to Durban, South Africa.

In the book, he talks in detail of setting up the station at Lindi, on the coast of what was then Tangyanika and is now Tanzania.

There was great excitement on the day we had our first flying boat land. It was coming southbound from Dar Es Salaam and everything went according to the plan we had always thought of.
Except, of course, that the locals were most intrigued to see the flying boat land and to see what went on. Everything to them was so new and so amazing because they'd only ever been used to the once-a-month coastal steamer coming through, or there might have been some trading dhows coming down from the Red Sea but that was all.
To have this flying boat coming in and landing, the magnificent flying machine coming down and landing on the water, beautiful spray coming up till she'd settled down. And then taxiing to the moorings we'd laid, which were satisfactory, which were picked up well and truly by the radio operator; the launches operated well and truly, and, you know, the customs officer came on board with us on the auxiliary launch, and the port health officer came on board in order to inspect health documents, and everyone was exceedingly happy!

Adirondack Editing - Removing Filter Words

This is one of a series of editing posts by Susan Uttendorfsky featured on The Story Reading Ape.

Adirondack Editing

Removing Filter Words

Filter words are placed between your character and the action.

Generally, they are added to a sentence when trying to describe something that your character is experiencing or thinking. While, as usual, there’s a place for them in writing, you can tighten up your scenes immensely when they’re removed. It’s another tidbit for helping you show, rather than tell, as without the filter words, you’re forced to add more description to get what you mean across.

What are some filter words?

Felt, realized, saw, wondered, seemed, decided, heard, knew, touched, watched, and can are some of the more common ones. You can search the Internet for other lists of filtering words. Cutting away your filtering words and forcing yourself to write without them results in more vivid scenes. Here are some sentence examples of filter words:

  • She remembered him kissing her at their wedding.
  • She felt relieved when he broke their date.
  • I heard a noise in the basement.

Choosing Keywords - reblogged from the Story Reading Ape

Choosing Keywords is a terrific guest post on TSRA from Jaq. D Hawkins

We’ve all dealt with it. We get our book files ready, check one last time for any typos that might have slipped through, get a cover file ready and write the crucial blurb that will sell or fail to sell our book… once someone actually sees it.
Then we get down to the line for selecting keywords and the fate of the book’s discoverability lies in the careful selection of a few words or terms that we predict people will use to search for a book just like the one we’re about to upload.
On Amazon, usually the seller that results in the largest percentage of sales, we get a limit of seven words or terms. How do we choose the keywords that will bring our book to the attention of our target audience?

New edition of the Viridian System Sampler now available

We slid this announcement into the post about Read an eBook Week, which finished yesterday.

In case you didn't notice - we have a new edition of the Viridian System Sampler out.

The 2017 edition contains three stories previously only on Jemima's blog, and all the stories are now in the style of the series (although the first is still in Zito's own voice).

Each comes with an explanation of how the story came about - most are in response to an online flash fiction prompt. These short stories sometimes have twists and narrow escapes that might not be sustainable in the series. Zito, who runs a bar and an escort agency on the primary planet, Pleasant Valley, features large in these tasters. The new ones include back story, and first appearances of characters who became important to the series.

The story titles in the second (2017) edition are:

  • The Orichalcum Library
  • The Appeal of Alpha Kenworthy (new)
  • Disappearing Act
  • Auburn Moon, Vermilion Tides
  • Upwelling
  • The Coprolite Conundrum (new)
  • The White Rose of York (new)
  • The Inspector Calls (new)

This sampler may continue to be revised to include different stories from time to time, although we wouldn't expect to do so now until 2019. You should be able to update your copy to the latest version from your purchase site.

Get it from Smashwords, iTunes, B&N, or Kobo

Plans for Willoughby's Book Launch

Having extended the pre-order phase for Willoughby the Narrator, book 7 in Jemima Pett's Princelings of the East series, we are now getting ready to consider book launch arrangements.

The latest idea is to launch on Thursday April 27th, which coincides with the letter W of the April Blogging from A to Z Challenge.

We are therefore inviting bloggers to join us for the book launch by posting about the book on that day, and joining in with a Giveaway.  You can join in whether you are doing the A to Z or not!

Jemima will be publishing details for the sign-up (to get a spot on the Giveaway) and BookLaunch Blast on her blog, with a special sign-up page with all the details and resources you need.  She'll also be pushing it on her A to Z Theme Reveal post on 20th March. (link not active until then)

Watch here for full details, coming soon.

Plans for 2017

A very happy new year to all our readers.  It looks like it's going to be a momentous one.  I hope that we get through it okay.

willoughby the narrator cover

Princelings books

We currently have a target date of March 15th for Willoughby the Narrator, but this could slip, depending on how much work is required once we have our editor's comments.  It is still available on pre-order at iTunes, Nook and Kobo, priced at $1.99.  This is likely to be held for the first few weeks after publication to let Kindle readers catch up with purchases from Smashwords!
Danielle English has already developed a near-final draft of the cover for book 8, the Princelings of the North, although the book has not yet gone to our editor.  The reveal will be later in the year, when we feel ready to estimate a publishing date.  Jemima says the cover is 'stunning'.
Jemima keeps mentally writing episodes of the final book.  She's wavering between taking time out of the Perihelix rewrite to get these down on paper, or at least into the computer.

Viridian System series

The good news is that Jemima has solved some of the problematic comments about diversity issues in the book, and you can read her comments on the Viridian series blog.
She says she's rewriting the Perihelix, but refuses to admit to a word count, which means there's a lot of crossing out going on.  It seems to have taken her a while to come to terms with the comments she's received on the first book, and she wrote about this in an IWSG post on her blog this month.

Guest posts

Following last autumn's guest posts on the Story Reading Ape's blog, Jemima is now posting every second Sunday of the month (except January's was on a Thursday).

Check out January's coupon offer for the Princelings Box Set on Smashwords, in the advert on the right.
